Who are we?

Our History

For South Africans, it is not strange to come up with a good idea or a “brilliant plan” with friends at a braai and then turn it into reality.

Thus, the foundation of the “Afrikaans Club Australia” was born. The club was founded in 1999 by four families, with the aim of allowing the Afrikaans language and culture to continue to exist in Australia.

The Afrikaans Club Australia founders were:

- Oswald & Cathy Niksch
- Kobus & Jelene du Plessis
- Callie & Ronel Rothman
- Jannie & Fransie Bloem

The “Afrikaans Club Australia” name was trademarked and officially registered as an “Incorporated Association” soon after. The first club meeting and committee was elected on 1 April 2000.

Over the last 2 decades we hold two to three family camps, sokkies, social bring and braai events and fun functions every year.

Our 2 large and popular camps are:

Noosa Northshore (Sunshine Coast, QLD)

We have a fun festival and catch the spirit with local and South African artists. Visitors are kept busy with all kinds of activities, such as Boeresport together with the whole family, Potjiekos competitions, Beach/sea fishing competitions. Fires are lit every night for a nice barbecue, dancing and socializing. Before covid-19, there were more than a thousand South Africans who attended the Noosa camp and had fun together.

Tallebudgera (Gold Coast, QLD) - Christmas Camp

Christmas camp is all about the children and enjoying Christmas. The parents and the children get a chance to do special activities together, Santa Claus and Sparkles the elf come for a visit and deliver gifts, children and parents ride a boat, jog and swim in the sea or at the water park. While the fires for the braai are burning every night, there is Afrikaans music playing in the background and you can hear everyone chatting and socializing.

"Over the last 2 decades we have hold family camps, sokkies, social bring and braai events and fun functions every year."
